Project Description
GreenPath Food, Ethiopia doubles organic export volume
GreenPath Food is an Ethiopian agribusiness that supplies premium quality organic certified produce to the European and Middle Eastern markets. As one of the few agribusinesses in East Africa, GreenPath Food grows organic produce using the latest thinking in agro-ecology and regenerative agriculture, with production led by smallholder growers.
It primarily exports legumes, perennial fresh-cut herbs, chilli peppers and avocados. Depending on the season fluctuations, GreenPath Food can export around 20 tons per week of organic produce.
Today, they have 241 smallholder farmers that have worked within Butajira and are all going through the process of being organic-certified with full transparency in their supply chain.
The client challenge
The main pain point for GreenPath was poor on-farm infrastructure that reduced the chances of maintaining the quality of their products. Cold chain on the production site was urgently needed for assuring that the temperatures required for export quality and to process the fresh produce under the best food-safety standards, while also increasing volumes by integrating more out-growers. Their main aim was to look after that part of the supply chain, maintain the freshness and the quality at top level right until the customer received their produce.
The InspiraFarms solution
The solution was clear. GreenPath needed cold chain technologies in order to maintain the temperature of their crops. InspiraFarms installed a packhouse with an integrated cold room that was built HACCP mid-care compliant, in order to efficiently upgrade their processes regarding quality control, packing and temperature management. By mid-2019, GreenPath unveiled their 240sqm packhouse. By the middle of 2020, they added another packhouse of the same size, with cold storage, reaching 480sqm total.
